Depression Assessment Measures

  • Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD)
    Purpose: Focuses on the identification of depressive symptoms and signs in patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and other Dementias.
    Admin time:  20-30 min. 20 min with carer and 10 min with patient.
    User Friendly: Moderate
    Administered by:  Clinician obtaining information from patient and an informant.
    Most Appropriate:  Primary, Community and Residential Care. To assess major depression by obtaining a clinical rating based on semi-structured interview questions.
    Downloads:

  • Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS)
    Purpose:  To assess and screen depression in elderly people.
    Admin time:  5-10 min
    User Friendly: Low due to scoring based on user feedback
    Administered by:  No interviewer training required.
  • Most  Appropriate:  Acute, Primary, Community and Residential Care. Does not include somatic symptoms. It focuses on the affective aspects of depression.
